Bat Infestations

If gable vents came factory with the screen on the outside instead of the inside they wouldn't be attracted to the gable vents. These louvers shield the bats from the sun and give them a place to roost away from predators during the day. The bad news is they hang upside down and urinate on the screen wire and it causes this screen to just fall apart.

When this screen becomes brittle from the urine the bats end up inside the attic and they find more areas to roost located inside the attic. The one in this photo is on the inside of the vent screen. This becomes dangerous because they do have a tendency to end up in the living quarters.

The droppings or feces the bats leave behind can build up over a period of time and these also can become very unhealthy. Sheetrock is not airtight by any means and these droppings can produce spores that can carry many different types of diseases that can be transmitted to humans just from breathing these spores.

Bats can transmit rabies and act as a host for encephalitis, both of which can be fatal to humans. Bat manure may contain histoplasmosis spores which can be transmitted to humans. Bat manure and feces, in large quantities, can produce offensive odors inside structures.

Bat control in Georgia is limited to a certain time of the year now. We have permits from the Department of Natural Resources that we have to follow guidelines they lay out for us. And from May 1st - August 15th we are not allowed to do any bat control. This is when bats have babies and believe it or not they are protected. The reason is they do help humans by keeping down insects as they eat them. Insects that carry diseases that could harm humans.
